Recreating the matte paintings used in their films, inspired by The Red Shoes

WATCH YOUR STEP

Delve into the red shoes underworld in this AR experience.

This interactive augmented reality experience was created as part of the BFI's Powell and Pressburger Season. It is a new form of music video, reimagining the 1948 film 'The Red Shoes', to bring the uncertainty, surrealism and fantasy it embodied into new technology. I composed the music using medieval instruments, used AI to recreate matte paintings in the traditional set style found in P&P films, and then used photogrammetry techniques to bring in real life 3d models with animation.

AI POSTCARDS TO THE FUTURE

how does AI see the future? Write a letter to the future on the back of one of these, putting past and future in your palm.

folk surrealism to question our futures

ai fortune teller

how can AI expand help us question our futures?

When approaching issues of innovation, we can use AI to expand thinking. Here for example, in my role as AIR for Hydrogen Research, I wanted to test how the AI would respond when prompted with a hydrogen testing machine. The AI creates a white balloon. When I use hydrogen cannisters, it interprets jewellery and coins.

How can we use this to interpret questions around our futures, to embed ethics into innovation? How can we use it as a new form of learning? How can we use AI as a visual tool to aid thinking around innovation?
