estuary sound ark
Radiophonic Institute | Creative Estuary
This Ivor-Novello nominated project was a large scale sonic exploration that brought local people closer to their environments through sound and music.
Estuary Sound Ark holds the sounds of the South East of England for people to discover in 100 years. It preserves everyday sounds that are at risk of being lost from climate change, with a focus on the River Thames and the River Medway- connecting Kent and Essex together.
I produced this project alongside Electronic Artist, Matthew Herbert, commissioning composers, artists + poets and bookmakers, managing a public callout and training local young people in sound preservation and composition.
1000's of sounds were collected and new scores created through collecting sounds in public space, working with BBC Radio 3, The British Library and collaborating with festivals including Ramsgate Festival of Sound, Intrafest and Electric Medway. The new works were played once to the public in a performance at The Gulbenkian before being archived within the time capsule for 100 years. The Sound Ark is now on display in Kent.
